Near the buffalo ranch in Lamar Valley, this shot was taken in a whopping negative 38 degrees. Lamar Valley last winter almost hit 50 below. Pack warm!

Be cautious what you pack. There is a saying in Yellowstone during the winter: Cotton Kills! Cotton fabric does not insulate well and if it gets wet can quickly draw heat away from your body. the best natural fiber to wear in winter is wool it can retain most of its insulating properties even when wet. Synthetics like propoline fleece are also great for winter. Dress in layers especially if you are out and about. If you're exercising outdoors (think hiking or skiing) wearing layers will allow you to open or even remove some if you get too warm and start to sweat. Even with good clothing sweating can cause a loss of body heat. Never a good thing.
